To whom it may concern,

I write to thank you for taking time out of your day to consider me for this opportunity. I understand you are a very busy person, so I will be brief.

I am a student of Computer Science. I am currently pursuing my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. I am passionate about software engineering and programming and have a strong interest in AI and blockchain technology. Aside from programming, I enjoy playing sports like soccer and badminton, experimenting with photography, and exploring new places. (this is false)

While I mainly focus on software development, I have from time to time endeavored to design such software. During my time at Brown University, I took a course in designing User Interfaces and User Experiences for digital computer systems.

In addition to the course work, I have also had the opportunity to work on projects outside of my academic requirements which have allowed me to further develop my skills in user interface design. I have designed interfaces for a medical records system, a web application for a clothing company, and an interface for a gaming system. (this is false)

Here is a summary of some of the work I’m proudest of:

  1. I was asked to redesign a website and make it mobile-friendly. I selected the United States Patent & Trademark Office’s online search tool, and developed a modern-feeling, responsive design that improves usability.
  2. I was tasked with making a React-based web app and decided to embrace the absurdity by making it Windows 95 themed while still trying to keep it functional.
  3. A team and I came up with a proposed UI design for a startup that delivers prescription drugs directly to people’s homes.
  4. I worked with a team to build a tool for saving and completing nested checklists using hypertext.

I hope this overview of my work shows me to be a compelling candidate for the position. It would be the pleasure of a lifetime to work with you.

Yours respectfully,

First Last.

P.S. I have attached a more detailed description of my work, if you consider my abilities to be worthy of a deeper consideration.

Responsive Redesign

For this assignment, I identified usability, learnability, memorability, and accessibility problems with the existing website; then used those findings to develop a refined approach. I also designed a basic Bootstrap-style UI component framework from scratch, featuring text fields, several styles of button, and dropdowns.

Development

Since this assignment was largely focussed on using React to make a web app, I decided to have a little fun with the UI portion. I used an off the shelf library for the Windows 95/98 theming, but incorporated the elements into a unique UI based around windows. I also carefully adjusted spacing to ensure that things looked good. Finally, I used Stable Diffusion and ImageMagick to create the exact aesthetic I wanted for the city photos. (None of the photos are real)

Iterative Design

For this assignment, I worked with a team to identify a recently-launched startup, and then created a mockup for a mobile app based on the description of their company. We went through multiple stages of design, including brainstorming a variety of sketches, consolidating them into a single low-fi wireframe, converting that to a high-fidelity Figma mockup, and then making design adjustments after talking to a professional designer and our peers.

BearCheck

I worked with a team to design and build a tool for creating and tracking the completion of complex, nested multimedia checklists. We developed tools to enable the checklists to change over time while still retaining the ability to audit previous sessions with the checklist.
